What is a themed or affinity cruise?
A themed cruise is a regular sailing with dedicated programming built around a specific interest — a game, a sport, a field of study, a passion — hosted by experts and designed for guests who share it. You book a stateroom on a normal departure. The difference is who else is aboard and what's scheduled while you're there.
An affinity cruise is closely related but starts from the other direction: a group that already exists — a club, a guild, an alumni association, a circle of friends — traveling together on a sailing chosen to suit them.
Most of our clients end up somewhere between the two. Four or six friends join a themed departure and find they've walked into a room of people who already speak their language.

Mah Jongg on the Danube
Emerald Cruises is running two American Mah Jongg sailings in August 2027 — eight-day cruises between Budapest and Munich, departing on August 4 and August 11.
The programming is built around the National Mah Jongg League card, with guided play, hosted sessions, instruction for newer players, and social events designed around the game rather than squeezed in beside it. The route calls at Bratislava, Vienna, Dürnstein, and Passau.
What makes this one work is the shape of the day. You're ashore in the morning — a walk through Vienna, an afternoon in a Wachau Valley village — and playing in the afternoon as the ship moves quietly through the heart of Europe.
Two departures is not many. If you have a table that's been talking about going somewhere together, this is the one to move on.
Pickleball on a river ship
AmaWaterways was the first river cruise line to put a regulation-size pickleball court on a ship. It sits on the Sun Deck of the AmaMagna, behind the wheelhouse, with a perimeter net — and because the net has to come down to clear the Danube's low bridges, you play while docked, in whatever storybook town you woke up in.
In April 2027, a second ship joins her. AmaRudi — the AmaMagna's double-width sister, carrying just 196 guests — makes her inaugural sailing from Vilshofen to Budapest on April 11, 2027, with the same full-size court on the Sun Deck.
Here's why we recommend this one for mixed groups: it solves the problem nobody names out loud. Half your group wants to move, and half wants a glass of wine and a view. This lets both happen without anyone being gracious about it, and everyone comes back to the same table at dinner.
Golf in a different country every few days
AmaWaterways' Concierge Golf Program runs on select departures of two itineraries: Magna on the Danube (April through October) and Impressions of the Seine & Paris (May through October).
The logistics are the point. You're collected from the ship by private car, your tee time is arranged, your clubs are cleaned and waiting, and lunch is at the clubhouse. The ship is your hotel, so it simply moves with you — Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary on the Danube route.

Keukenhof opens for roughly seven weeks each spring — in 2027, from mid-March into early May — and then it's gone for a year. Seventy acres, around seven million bulbs planted by hand, and rivers of blue hyacinth running under the trees.
Uniworld's Tulips & Windmills is built around that window, sailing Holland and Belgium with a full day at Keukenhof and a visit to the nineteen UNESCO-protected windmills at Kinderdijk — the structures that have held the water back for centuries and shaped everything that grows there.

A literature festival across the Atlantic
Cunard sails a literature festival on the Queen Mary 2 — seven nights from New York to Southampton, December 2 to 9, 2027, programmed with the team behind the Times and Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival. Authors, critics, editors, and publishers are aboard for talks, workshops, and signings.
The structural advantage for a book club: there's no outbound flight. The trip begins the moment you walk aboard in Brooklyn. No connections, no six a.m. anything, no wondering whether the bags made it.
And seven days at sea is a genuinely strange and wonderful thing. There is nowhere to be. There's a library, weather outside the window, and someone nearby who wants to talk about what she's reading.
Normandy, done properly
The National WWII Museum runs its own travel program, and their Normandy journey pairs four nights at a château in the Norman countryside with four nights sailing the Seine aboard Uniworld's SS Joie de Vivre. Museum historians travel with you.
This matters more than it might sound. The usual objection to a WWII trip isn't the history — it's the assumption of nine days on a motorcoach. This is the opposite: serious days, and evenings that give something back.
You stand on the sand at Omaha. The distance from the water's edge to the bluff is not something a book can give you; you have to walk it. And then you come back to a beautiful room and a good dinner and the quiet a day like that requires.

Art, history, and the pleasure of being taken seriously
AmaWaterways sails a collection of river journeys with Smithsonian Journeys, the travel program of the Smithsonian Institution. Every departure carries two Smithsonian experts — historians, archaeologists, art historians — and includes excursions designed only for these sailings.
The Rhine route runs from Amsterdam to Basel over eight days, through the Netherlands, Germany, and into France. 2027 departures include late May, mid-June, mid-July, and late September.

That said, groups of roughly sixteen or more open up additional possibilities — group amenities, private events, and occasionally a hosted departure built around your club specifically. If your circle is closer to that size, it's worth a conversation before anyone books individually.
When should you book a themed sailing?
Twelve to eighteen months ahead is the realistic window, and closer to eighteen for anything with limited departures.
Themed sailings behave differently from standard ones. There are often only one or two dates a year, the people who want them tend to know about them early, and add-on programs like golf can close before the cruise itself sells out. 2027-2028 sailings are being booked now.
